Why panels blow out
- Aging mesh — UV-degraded screen loses tensile strength and can’t resist wind loads
- Deteriorated spline — Old spline hardens and shrinks, losing its grip on the screen
- Large panel spans — Bigger panels catch more wind. Some older enclosure designs have oversized panels.
- Wind direction — Panels facing the prevailing wind direction (east/southeast in Orlando) take the most abuse
Prevention
- Rescreen before hurricane season — Fresh, properly tensioned screen handles wind far better than old mesh
- Upgrade to Super Screen — 3x the wind resistance of standard fiberglass
- Replace spline — Even if the screen is okay, new spline holds it more securely
- Trim trees — Reduce windborne debris that punches through screen
- Consider Florida glass — For wind-facing lower panels, glass panels eliminate blowout risk entirely
After panels blow out
Don’t leave the gaps — exposed enclosure panels let in bugs, debris, and fail pool safety code requirements. Even temporary repair is better than open panels.
